Birchgrove Residence
Secular Retreat
Major replanning & an extension was required for this four level Victorian terrace in Sydney’s historic suburb of Birchgrove. Situated on a deep waterfront block on Sydney Harbour, the current house does not take advantage of its fantastic northerly aspect and water views.
Whilst respecting the heritage fabric, the new proposal introduces more contemporary spaces that elevate everyday living. A north facing double height space contains main living areas, designed to delicately balance the idea of looking outward to beautiful views, but curating interiors that offer privacy and a sense of retreat.
A smaller, architectural volume contains what we have nicknamed ‘Booktopia’, a library containing our clients’ extensive book collection and an inviting, serene space to write, study and quietly retreat from the everyday.
The interiors address both contemporary and heritage architecture. Unified by strong geometric planning, the new spaces are balanced with a soft palette of natural and sustainable finishes and decorative elements.
Birchgrove Residence is situated on Gadigal and Wangal Land and is currently in Development Application
